I am happy to announce that Dingle has a fresh fish shop for the first time in years. I am so excited!
O’Catháin Iasc Teo., on the Quay, have opened a little fish shop right next to their factory. Only open two days, I had to queue behind a few other delighted locals to get my bit of turbot for tonight’s dinner. So, it looks like it will be successful, which is great news. Continue reading »

1 bar of dark, dark chocolate. Check
1/2 full jar of peanut butter (I’m ever the optimist). Check
Flour. Butter. Eggs. Check. Check. Check.
Brown sugar. Check (but minus the Rolling Stone)
Handful of peanuts. Check
Handful of leftover chocolate and peanut butter swirls. Check.
If Pi equals 3.14 and x = 5, carry the 2 and divide by 7 and you should end up with…
CHOCOLATE AND PEANUT BUTTER SWIRL BROWNIES.

I don’t often get to eat a good piece of fish. Because R doesn’t touch the stuff and because I live in a studio apartment and I don’t want my pillow to smell all too similarly to what I just put in my stomach, I rarely get to cook fresh fish. But last night I wasn’t in a pasta mood and I had had chicken the night before and I was really just craving a nice piece of fish. Continue reading »

We’d a bit of an anniversary at the weekend. Yes, you’ve guessed it, we’re the quintessential Irish couple who hooked up on Paddy’s night. He treated me to a late supper in the Lobster Pot and the rest, as they say, is history (that’s a funny joke if you’re from Limerick, if you’re not, The Lobster Pot is a fast food joint, frequented by drunkards, famous for garlic & cheese chips & battered sausages). Goodfellas, you’d think, would be forgotten news by now after the overturning of a decision to award the restaurant £25k in damages. But thanks to the Times, they’re back in the limelight again. For anyone who hasn’t read Giles Coren’s review of Goodfellas, click here to see what all the fuss is about. The Well Done Fillet Blog has the best headline I’ve come across in a long while on a blog. Continue reading »

…in which Bibliocook pays a quick visit in the rain to Blackheath Farmers’ Market, picking up a log of goat’s cheese on the way, has dinner in a rather nice private room at The Punter in Cambridge, eats breakfast in Baker and Spice (while admiring the enormous rectangles of butter and jars of jam for sharing in the middle of the communal table, wondering idly how long it takes before the display is irretrievably destroyed) dashes into The Hummingbird Bakery to take a peep at their cupcakes, walks all the way from Richmond train station to Skye Gyngall’s tea house at Petersham Nurseries only to discover – oh tragedy – that it is shut on Mondays, cooks dinner (a gnocchi dish, with Gubbeen cheese and chorizo imported by Caroline, very much adapted from an idea in this month’s delicious.) for the London-based Brother and his partner, pays homage – once again – at Books for Cooks and catches up with a former Ballymaloe classmate over dark Americanos, Mushrooms and Goat’s Cheese on Brioche and a Chocolate Loaf Cake at the Grocer on Elgin. I’m beyond ecstatic to present another product review (check out the last one if you missed it) in which our testers have only good things to say. Our Recipe4Living readers had the opportunity to test out OXO’s Handheld Mandoline Slicer and now they can’t stop slicing and dicing (er…maybe just slicing).
From tomatoes to potatoes, and eggplant to any plant, this slicing machine is efficient, easy to use and easy to clean! Continue reading »

Video blogging and restaurant reviews
You will have noticed the lack of activity in the blog in the past week and there is a very good explanation for this. Firstly we are moving the blog over to the main iFoods.tv site which will mean typing in a new address but we will keep you posted on that and secondly and more importantly we are turning the blog into a video blog or vlog. I’ll be back at work next Saturday, 22nd, and probably not posting in the meantime. Though there’s plenty of material waiting: that Bodegas Tintoralba review, another tasting review of the wines of Cantine Cipressi in Molise, Italy, the remaining photos from Vinisud, the new wines from that trip…. Little sis and I decided to check out Carluccio’s for our dinner last night. I popped in a few weeks ago to pick up some bits in the deli section and the queue was out the door. We stuck our heads in on our way down Dawson St. yesterday and seeing the absence of a queue we hopped straight in. The fact that it was only half five might have helped – by the time we were leaving it was close on seven and there were at least a dozen people in the queue. Continue reading »

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! My brother was in our Killarney shop, and I was too busy making coffees and scooping ice cream in Dingle to see much of the parade. I managed to snap a couple of photos in the one lull we had, which are here.
There was a great crowd around, and a very good atmosphere. For once, it was actually dry, and although quite windy, no one got wet!
In other news, Ice Cream Ireland has just passed the 100,000 visitor mark, which I feel is a big achievement. Continue reading »

If you make your favourite fruit cake, it canbe turned into a suitable Irish Celebration Confectionby adding Guinness.
I have not tried the recipe in the Title Bar here, but it has a good combination of flavours, including orangeand chocolate.
For a more classic cake, add walnuts to the mixtureand when the cake comes out of the oven, souse it ina goodly amount of stout while it is still very hot.

James Corbett points out there’s an interactive Google Map for finding Farmers’ Markets in Ireland.
James of the Galvins reviews the cutesy recipe website Forkd and the clever design it uses.
Giles Coren from The Times goes to Goodfellas in West Belfast to critique their menu after the restaurant lost their defamation case in the Northern Ireland Appeals Court which means reviewers can once again review restaurants without fear of being sued to death. For now. A retrial has been ordered. The Times kept on saying it was Goodfellas v The Irish Times. Wrong Giles, it was the Irish News.
Giles has this to say:
It is revolting. It is ill-conceived, incompetent, indescribably awful. A dish so cruel I weep not only for the animal that died to make it, but also for the mushrooms. Ms Workman said it was inedible but, to be honest, as it sits before me, congealing quietly, I cannot leave it alone but return to it every few minutes with the grim fascination of a toddler mesmerised by a pile of its own faeces, nibbling at it, gurning with revulsion, then nibbling some more.

Due to the fact that my email address is pretty easy to access on the internet I end up getting sent about 100 spam emails every day of the week which can be incredibly annoying and I usually delete them without even glancing at them. I did however open one by mistake today and saw this photo which totally cracked me up! Hilarious! Continue reading »
