Slippin? away!

A post by Ummera at Ummera Weblog

Only 34 days to go, and the weather’s going to get colder!
A couple of interesting places to visit:
I was reading about Virginia Downs in the UK who has won a legal challenge against DEFRA regarding pesticides. What courage. Read about it here .
And a new online wine company based near us in Bandon; odd name, but Curious Wines have a good website.  Continue reading »

Those of you over here Stateside are well aware that turkey season is just about here (Thanksgiving is next Thursday). I always associate turkey with Christmas but now since I’m over here I get a double dose with both holidays which for me equals lots of naps. By the time Santa comes I’ll have had…  Continue reading »

Budweiser Budvar Dark Lager

A post by Beer Novice at here be beer

I found this lurking in my fridge where I had put it a few weeks ago. I think I left it in there one night and forgot about it due to the fact that I put some leftovers on top of it. What this says about my fridge hygiene and cleanliness is pretty obvious but there you go. Look on the bright side, you don’t have to live with me.
Anyway, back to the beer. I had tried and enjoyed Budvar on draught before so this seemed like a good choice.  Continue reading »

Wine Fair at Cases Wine Warehouse for Enable Ireland 2008
The 13th of November saw the most recent stop on the whirlwind that has become robertfranciswine.ie. Peter Boland and the crew at Cases were having their Christmas Wine Fair with over 100 wines to taste and in aid of a good cause Enable Ireland – Winner Alright Winner Alright !  Continue reading »

Playfully titled “Show Your Craft,” episode 2 was named for the elimination challenge where Tom Colicchio handed over the knives to his own restaurant: Craft (pictured above). But, one contestant’s attempt at being ‘crafty’ with an exotic ingredient backfires and sends [him/her] home. That’s irony number one. Another irony came from the hot dog quickfire challenge.  Continue reading »

From spreadable vegetable dips to bruschetta toppings, It turns out the Sauces N’ Love Scarpetta brand makes a lot more than just pasta sauces. While I was delightfully enjoying my rigatoni a la vodka thanks to Scarpetta, other Recipe4Living product testers were serving up appetizer dips based on Scarpetta’s intriguing line of flavors. From artichoke and olive to a healthful asparagus, these vegetarian, gluten-free and dairy-free products have a lot going for them!  Continue reading »

Yes I know I’ve been absolutely rubbish at updating my blog recently. Lets just say that stuff got in the way of things and then my general laziness got mixed up in there too.
To begin in some way to make amends I would like to review one of the new line of Innocent’s healthy lunch pots. I am a big fan of Innocent and have been for a number of years now. They began selling fruit drinks about eight years ago and haven’t looked back since.  Continue reading »

Best in show

A post by The Beer Nut at The Beer Nut

I was in early to the Belfast Beer & Cider Festival on Saturday. When newer arrivals appeared and squinted inquisitively at the beer list I gave them one unequivocal recommendation: Dark Star Hophead. Yes, perhaps it’s not a beer to start a sampling session with – partly because of the intense flavour, and partly because it makes other pale bitters seem hopelessly inadequate – but it’s not one to be missed, and I was surprised it hadn’t already sold out.  Continue reading »

I took part in Gordon Ramsey’s Cookalong a few weeks ago which I was dead excited about because on the menu was Minted Peas and Watercress veloute (which I was too late tuning in to the show to make), Gordon’s Classic Lagasagne al Forno and Lemon & Lime Syllabub.
The night all this was happening Rob was away so the fact that I got to make lasagne was perfect because Rob hates cheese and pasta so I never get to have lasagne making this my first ever homemade lasagne.  Continue reading »

A tough time in the food industry

A post by noreply@blogger.com (John Ferris) at Food and Drink

There’s been a few posts on here about a story ran by the Sunday World on a local chef. And it got me thinking as to how restaurants are holding up in the current financial crisis. It’s no secret that when every day costs spiral out of control, that the first things to go are the little luxuries in life. And that puts a restaurant reviewer like myself in something of a pickle.I checked back and hadn’t realised how much of an effect it’s having on me going out for meals.  Continue reading »

…another Wednesday at the bakery and what a night it was again. We baked white yeast bread this time and learned that you can add sour dough starter to a traditional white bread…and please let me tell you that it was simply yummy.
Declan also showed us how to make the bread in a food processor using the blades. I’d say that my kitchen machine will be very busy in the future.  Continue reading »

Making Veggie Paninis

A post by Hillary at Chew On That

Sometimes a great meal is much simpler than you think. I had the pleasure of making my own veggie paninis at a Whole Foods cooking class and it gave me a new outlook on homemade sandwiches. As Maxine has pointed out in the past, paninis can be fantastic, but I never quite realized the extent of it until the Whole Foods kitchen gave us an assortment of fresh veggies, cheeses, spreads and breads so we could each create our own signature sandwiches.  Continue reading »

Last year I went on a little rant about how much I HATE when people put marshmallows on their sweet potatoes. Ok, maybe it was more like a huge rant (can you still sense my bitterness?) But this year, I am happy to read that Mark Bittman, food writer for the New York Times, agrees with me. I mean, frankly, why wouldn’t someone self-dubbed “The Minimalist” agree that sweet potatoes do not need marshmallows?  Continue reading »

A couple of weeks ago I made a promise to one of my many cyberfriends; I know Evelyne through the Irish Business Womens Forum aka IBW. Like many people I am quite partial to the odd drop of wine which is where my friend comes in; Through The Grape Vine is an on-line wine merchant specialising in fine wines, personal and corporate gifts, personalised wines, hampers and all manner of sumptuous gifts.  Continue reading »

The lighter side

A post by The Beer Nut at The Beer Nut

In yesterday’s post on CAMRA NI’s festival in Belfast, I mentioned the collective decision by my cohort that a particular beer smelled of urine. It did – Bateman’s Valiant exuded a powerful odour of railway station toilets, as Adeptus has also already said. It’s still enjoyable, though, having a full body and a sharp bitter flavour, with just a touch of burnt corn on the end. Holding my nose I could drink a pint of this no problem.  Continue reading »
