I have in my possession yet another cookbook. This time it’s “What to eat now, more please” by Valentine Warner. He’s a bit mad but has some lovely recipes and one of them that I have made time and time again is his recipe for tabbouleh. Of course I can’t help but fiddle with the recipe a bit and I’ve added capers and anchovies to mine to give it a bit more of a punch and served it with a lovely thick salmon fillet cooked on a grill pan. Delicious! Continue reading »

Cork – Eating & Drinking – Restaurants
THE ELM TREE
This was a disappointing visit to the newly refurbished Elm Tree. It was busy but understaffed, leading to long delays in table service. Customer service, how are ye. Delays at every course and even a long wait for the bill as the harried staff had too much on their hands.
It is something of a food conveyor, a popular one by the looks of it. Continue reading »

We held a tasting of Spanish wines on Wednesday at our Marina premises, where the parking is free’n’easy and where we’re beginning to fit out our shop with the Wintower wine racking – for which we are Irish agents – that has proved so useful and convenient in our English Market shop in the centre of Cork. Many of my friends hate watching cooking shows because they think if they can’t taste the food, what’s the point? Well Wednesday night I had the pleasure and the privilege of tasting appetizers and drinks prepared by Rick Bayless’ team of chefs while watching the finale of Top Chef Masters WITH Rick Bayless at his very own Frontera Grill. Now, of course I watch plenty of cooking shows without all this amazing hullabaloo, but this memory will certainly take the cake! Continue reading »

Welcome to our 3rd and final installment for turmeric week. I suppose when I asked myself, ‘could I do more?’ I wasn’t messin’ about! I had a blast trying out all these new recipes and I definitely learned some new skills. I hope you enjoyed this week as much as I did.
If you’re not familiar with quinoa, it’s time to try it out! Quinoa is packed full of nutrients and is cooked very much like rice although it has more protein than most other grains. Continue reading »

For the last couple of weeks we have been working away on the next stage of FoodandFizz and I have to say I am pretty excited about it. Put simply it allows you to embed lovely food porn into any website that you might own and have a constantly updating stream of food photos. Food Bloggers can either embed their own photo stream or bigger publishing sites can have a beautiful recipes page that updates automatically with 20 recipes every single day. Continue reading »

I’m a wee bit lazy today as the flu takes over my brain, so I’m linking to some great summer recipes from some of my favourite Irish food bloggers. There’s a few here for a BBQ and a few for a picnic.

This bottle of Berliner Kindl Weisse has hung around in my fridge for quite some time now. I didn’t worry about it going bad, the lactic acid content took care of any spoilage issues, but also the right moment to drink it just didn’t present itself. It is a style of beer I’ve been eager to try for quite some time with the promise of a sharp tang and low alcohol content. Sadly this brand of Berliner weisse left me a tad unsatisfied. Everybody worth knowing likes cake. But although cake is great, much of what we buy on the shop shelves is loaded with artificial colours, flavours, preservatives, hydrogenated fats, and added salts. Didn’t you ever wonder why – one year on – that muffin at the back of the press seems so fresh?
The Foods of Athenry,… Continue reading »

Ampelomeryx is an extinct mammal that lived during the Miocene period. It was a even-toed ungulate that had frontal and occipital appendages. It was similar to Tauromeryx and Triceromeryx. It was a herbivore, perhaps a browser (Wikipedia)
This curious beast, viewable on the bottle pictured, can be described as a cross between a deer and a giraffe. It lived over 17 million years ago in what would have been a very different looking sub-tropical Gascony. Continue reading »

… and it might be the last one. One of the blogs I follow up regularly is the Beer Nut – a blog dedicated to – and here you might be surprised – BEER. Anyhow, the beer nut recommended an American beer that my dad might like. So, I thought I treat my dad a bit and get him some more unusual beer. Off I went to the Abbot’ Ale House which praises itself to have the biggest collection on different beers in Cork if not Ireland. Continue reading »
