Wow, I am still in Kells Mood. Dorothy invited Caz, Angela and myself to her cottage in Kells and we had a ball. It was the most relaxing weekend I had in a long time. Everything was chilled out and we took it all in with a big smile on our faces.
We headed out on Friday evening and Dorothy was the designated driver for the weekend – not that anyone objected. We arrived at the cottage in the dark but when Dor lit the lights, it was as if we arrived in paradise.  Continue reading »

WEST CORK HOTELThe West Cork Hotel in Skibbereen has a lot going for it: it is central (with its own car park), it is comfortable, gives good deals, has riverside views (where an otter, see photo, performed this weekend), an unusual extension to its very comfortable cosy bar out onto a disused railway bridge (photo), and a friendly staff.
Good deals on food also. On certain nights, you can get.  Continue reading »

I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but over the last few years, more and more foodie TV programs have been going on about our western diet and how it has got to change. The first ‘personality’ that I noticed doing this was Jamie Oliver, I’m not saying he’s the first to say it, I’m saying he’s the first that I heard it from.
Our western diet is causing massive problems for almost all nations in what we call the ‘western world’.  Continue reading »

Festival season

A post by The Beer Nut at The Beer Nut

It’s been a busy few days, beerwise, involving some thorough investigations into the new wave of Irish beers on the scene right now. It began with the kick-off of The Porterhouse Independent Irish Beer & Whiskey Festival on Thursday. This year, joyously, the range is too big to squeeze onto one bar so it took trips to both Central and Temple Bar branches to get a taste of all the newcomers.  Continue reading »

A post by Caroline at Bibliocook: All About Food

It’s been a big week in the life of a Little Missy. She’s been happy to stand up and cruise around the furniture ever since we were in New Zealand then, two weeks ago, just shy of 11½ months, she took off. Starting with little unsteady forays in the sitting room, she started to walk on her own, chortling with pleasure, arms windmilling by her sides as she tried to balance and master this new means of locomotion.  Continue reading »

The grapes we use for wine, bar a few exceptions, come from the Vitis Vinifera family. You could spend all day listing them, but the likes of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Riesling are all from this species of grape.
Cultivated on every continent on Earth, except for Antarctica, its origins stretch from Europe to south-west Asia, but unlike Phylloxera, it’s managed to find its way to Chile, where it’s made a home for itself.  Continue reading »

Sadface, kinda

So Galway and the Irish Blog Awards came and went last night, and while I was a shoe-in for Best Spud, the food and drink honours this year went to the very sweet and multi-talented Donal with his Good Mood Food Blog. He adds the blog crown to his cookbook, newspaper columns, television appearances, pop-stardom and who-knows-what-else to come – quite a phenomenon to contend with!  Continue reading »

THE SKIBBEREEN FARMERS MARKET
The Saturday Farmers Market in Skibbereen town is one of the biggest, one of the best. It resembles a good French market and that comparison was underlined when it was blessed with fine weather this Saturday morning.
There is a great variety of stalls here: fish, herbs, cheese (including Gubbeen), crepes, chocolate, plants, books, stained glass, cakes, jams and.  Continue reading »

LA JOLIE BRISE
La Jolie Brise is one of a small string of pizza, restaurant and room rental properties run by the Waterfront in Baltimore (West Cork).
They include Chez Youen, a French Restaurant, but it was to the pizzeria plus fish tables of La Jolie Brise that we headed yesterday at lunch time.
A few years back, we spent two glorious days staying and eating in the Waterfront and one evening.  Continue reading »

Starter: salad of beetroot, feta, olives, tomato, and toasted seeds. That got us off to the best of starts. Light and sharp, just the.  Continue reading »
