We have finally managed to get a snap of a Dublin bus with the Denny sausage ad on. God knows they were everywhere recently but we just never had the camera out in time! Might sound boring to you, but very exciting to team Denny!
I can’t take the credit for the find…thanks to Brendan from Denny for sending it on. And, nobody was killed in the process. To be honest, I think it was parked up in the bus garage when this was taken! Continue reading »

THE CHOC OF IT
Easter is coming fast and if you’ve been fasting – even if you haven’t – then you have some good things coming, thanks to our chocolate makers.
My sweet hit of the year so far has been the real shell eggs that the imaginative Nicola of Pandora Bell has come up with. Yeah. Real hens shells (see pic) filled with top class chocolate. Available in Cork at Bramley Lodge, O’Keeffe. Continue reading »

The Italian Trade Commission, along with Jean Smullen, the human dynamo of wine events in Ireland, have got together to organise a series of tutored tastings of Italian wine.
Benefit of tutored tastings
While the open format wine tastings are great, I believe you can get a far better experience when there is more of a sit down, tutored format. The Landmark Australia tasting being a great example. Continue reading »

I thought I’d better record some of the wheels within wheels currently hurtling around the Bubble Brothers velodrome before they lose their momentum, or the spokes get spannered.
Fearghal and Simon, the Revolution Cycle team, are well on their way to becoming the first Irish circumnavigators of the globe by bicycle. They have confidently added a countdown timer to their website, showing about seven weeks to go before they arrive back where they started in Greystones, County Wicklow. Continue reading »

Bits and Pizzas was a childhood favourite. Like Blake’s in Stillorgan, this Dun Laoghaire pizza joint harks from a pre-boom time when there wasn’t much choice of restaurant. But unlike Blake’s, which dated with the 80’s, Bits and Pizzas stood the test of time. standing out a shining example of a “cheap and cheerful” lunch or dinner. Continue reading »

THE ALTERNATIVE BREAD COMPANY
There is amazing choice on offer at the Alternative Bread Company counters in the English Market (Cork), baskets of fresh bread made and supplied by quite a few bakers, including regular products such as traditional sodas, to gluten free, foccacias and sourdough and rye bread.
I picked up a rye loaf there today, intending to compare it with the one I bought at a. Continue reading »

MARK’S CHEESE
You will see stalls selling, and with a sign up saying Mark’s Cheese, at most of the Farmers Markets.
Mark Hosford is a seller rather than a producer and collects, minds and sells the cheeses of many local producers. They have a huge selection and helpful staff.
Recently, in Mahon, I bought some of that excellent and well known Hegarty’s Mature Cheddar while, even more recently. Continue reading »

I’ve posted before that there are lots of stir in pasta sauces available but many of them are quite bland and can be full of salt and sugar.
This is another healthy alternative that is ready in no time and will keep in the fridge on standby for a couple of days.
The recipe used roasted peppers. Jarred peppers work just fine, but you roast your own if you have a little more time.
The following recipe will coat 120g cooked pasta and serve two people. Continue reading »

Hey guys,
So today I’ve reached a milestone. It’s the 10th anniversary of my 30th birthday.
Ba dum bum
Seriously though this is a great day for me and I’m excited about hittin’ the big 4-0!
In lieu of presents this year what I’d really like today from all of you is a favour. Continue reading »

It was lovely, but was it worth €16.95?
An caller to Liveline recently complained of being charged €2.90 for dash of Mi-Wadi and some tap water. It reminded me of two seperate experiences on a break in Wicklow last week .
This post should perhaps have a question mark with the Bad Value category. At the Brooklodge, I had a glass of Pinot Noir. It was really wonderful, a crisp and clean wine with rich aromas and blackberry and plum tastes. Continue reading »

Superquinn’s growing on me more and more. Granted, it’s more expensive than the other supermarkets, but it has excellent special offers and some really good quality food. There’s two branches near where I live, so I occasionally find myself there for treats: stick to the specials and you won’t spend a fortune.
I’m currently enjoying the fresh hot cross buns. A few days ago, I snubbed hot cross buns as old-fashioned, boring, and riddled with cinnamon. Continue reading »

Whether you’ve done the whole 40 day abstinence (down with that sort of) thing or not, for many of us Easter’s the first chance of the year to properly kick back and indulge. So, with ten days to go, we’ve carefully selected 12 bottles of Easter delight, and being good Easter bunnies knocked 20% off the price! Continue reading »

I never buy pizzas from the supermarket, but last week sampled Lidl’s Trattoria Alfredo, which you’ll find in the frozen section. This is an excellent pizza: a thin and crispy base, sweet tomato sauce, and quality toppings. I threw on some sliced rashers that would otherwise have been thrown out.
Best of all, the Trattoria pizza is only €3.59 for two pizzas: serve one of them on a lazy evening with a small salad and easily you’ll feed two people. Delicious. Continue reading »

If Failte Ireland want to use just one thing to promote Ireland overseas, The Country Cooking of Ireland is the book that they need to thrust into the hands of potential tourists.
Writer Colman Andrews has impeccable pedigree – one of the founders of Saveur, the author of books on Catalan, Italian and French cuisine, and freelance contributer to any number of esteemed American food magazines including the last lamented Gourmet, Bon Appétit and Food & Wine – and he ate his way through the high- and byways of this country to put this book together. So Bowls and Jugs, they’re maybe not as essential as ingredients and pots and pans but as you start to cook more and more, you will begin to find that for some recipes (particularly baking) they are a big help at the least and in some cases essential (measuring jug).
We have a selection of mixing bowls and measuring jugs but I would recommend 4 mixing bowls and 1 measuring jug as a minimum. Continue reading »

As I mentioned last Wednesday, Ireland’s breweries have been in overdrive recently, resulting in lots of new beers coming on the market now. Pale ales seem to be particularly popular among the brewers and at the weekend I sampled the second one out of Carlow: O’Hara’s Irish Pale Ale. It’s a bit of a heavyweight, this. 5.2% ABV with a massively full body that demands your full attention while you get stuck into it. Continue reading »
