BRENDAN’S VEGGIES BURRITOS and BURGERS
Fast (well, fairly fast) Food stalls did a roaring trade during the weekend Jazz festival. I found myself in the queue at Brendan’s Veggies Burritos and Burgers and ended up with one of his Burritos. This was one packed piece of stuff, probably equivalent to in poundage to any lunch plate around town and all for just a fiver.
These are apparently the real.  Continue reading »

AUGUSTINE’S
Jazz group It Takes 3 entertained us while chef Brendan Cashman fed us well at Augustine’s on Sunday night.
His €45.00 Jazz menu kicked off with a Bloody Mary and ended with a glass of the excellent house Port.
Enjoyed my well presented starter of Boudin of Clonakilty Black Pudding, Cauliflower Purée Salad of Spiced Apricot & Pané Quail’s Egg, Pancetta Crisp and Cider Glaze. Clon.  Continue reading »

Domesticated

A post by The Beer Nut at The Beer Nut

“Needs more Dog” seems to be DrinkStore’s opinion of the Irish beer market, which is why they’re now dealing directly with the European importer Bier & Co and have increased the range of Flying Dog beers available.  Continue reading »

Earlier this month our family went vegetarian for a week. My husband and I have been wanting to try on vegetarianism for awhile and when our friends mentioned their interest, we made a pact to go meat-free together. To sweeten the deal, we agreed to have each other over for dinner during the week. As you can probably figure out by my posts, we tend to eat (and enjoy) meat a few times per week. But honestly, except for a momentary craving for a turkey sandwich, I didn’t miss meat at all.  Continue reading »

My desk is all a-clutter. Assorted items clamour for my frequently divided attention, and, lately, suffer from varying degrees of neglect.
Over there, my review copy of Domini Kemp’s new book, Itsa Cookbook, languishes.  Continue reading »

Bring your own lunch and some to share at foodcamp

Im just back from a trip to Kilkenny after spending a fantastic few days at Savour Kilkenny and on Friday at foodcamp. A first for Ireland, Foodcamp was organised to allow chefs, foodies, farmers, food prodcuers and all those involved in food boards to get together in the one place. 20 different sessions were held over the day, all in a spirit of not advertising but sharing best practices, ideas and inspiration.  Continue reading »

Each October, Ireland welcomes the tradition of baking Barm Brack, a fruit-filled tea bread. This sweet tea bread was traditionally eaten on Halloween, when a token is baked into it to be used as a form of fortune-telling. The eater may find a ring (predicting impending marriage); a button or thimble (portents of bachelor or spinsterhood respectively); or a coin, (presaging wealth).  Continue reading »

When I was doing a massive tidyup last week, I came across an old copy of BBC Good Food magazine & spent a happy half hour having a browse through it.  One recipe that really caught my eye was for a pear & ginger cake and when a copy of Domini Kemp’s new itsa Cookbook arrived in the post with a gingerbread recipe, my mind was made up.   Believe it or not, I had never made gingerbread before, and Domini’s recipe seemed scarily uncomplicated, so I decided to give it a go, with a view to using most of it as a thank you to my parents for letting me stay in their house yet again!  When I walked in, Lulu was there in her Halloween costume and immediately demanded to know when I was going to make “those delicious meringues” again.  She then polished off a lump of this gingerbread, offering her Nanny a fingernail sized piece in a token sharing gesture.  She’s just so kind!  Continue reading »

O’FLYNN’S BUTCHERS
O’Flynn’s Butchers in Marlboro Street may well be out of the shared limelight that the English Market endows on its tenants but, such is the quality of product and service that O’Flynn’s have maintained for decades, their customers will seek them out time and time again.
Called in there this Jazz Weekend Saturday and, after some banter and spot-on advice, left a happy.  Continue reading »

BAKERY UNION

A post by Billy Lyons at RESTAURANTS AND FOOD IN CORK

BAKERY UNION
Amazing the amount of new places springing up around town. Does it all point to a phoenix rising from the ashes of the Celtic pussycat?
Latest I spotted is the Elizabeth Kovacs’ Bakery Union in Marlboro Street. Got myself some coffee on the go there this jazzy day but then added a few tasty pastries to take home. They also do some tempting looking breads, of course! Including some.  Continue reading »

ORGANIC REPUBLIC
Sampling their figs and dates in the English Market. That was how I met up with Organic Republic recently. Hadn’t even heard of this Caitriona Daunt and Willie Doherty outfit before but those dates and figs were delicious.
They do a whole range of fruits and veg and will deliver boxes to your door in Cork city and surrounds. You will see them at some Farmers Markets, including.  Continue reading »
