Here’s a beautiful seasonal rustic vegetable recipe that works great as a side dish but is equally brilliant as a stand alone vegetarian or vegan dish. I love Brussels sprouts and grew up eating them as part of our Sunday dinner back in Ireland. You either love them or hate them but along with the beets here they’re dynamite. These are still available in your local farmers market but with Spring just here I’d get your hands on some of these and give this a go.
Cheers. Continue reading »

Is that the sun I see in the sky? Great. And it’s going to be there forever? Even better. And picnic season has begun? This is the greatest day in the history of Ireland.
Picnics spark mixed reactions. For some, they bring to mind soggy, sand-encrusted sandwiches with a measly layer of slimy picnic ham. Continue reading »

BLARNEY FARMERS MARKET
Enjoyed a pleasant stroll around the Blarney farmers market in the Grounds of the Blarney Woollen Mills Hotel yesterday.
This market is not all about food and has a few craft stalls. One that catches the ear as much as the eye is Windwalker. You will hear the music of the flute as you approach.
Windwalker (021 4874851 and 086 8168652) makes North American Indian style. Continue reading »

I promised a little while back that I’d let you know how I was getting on with the Leica D-Lux 5, and I’ll finally get around to it here.
I don’t think there’s any point for me to go into the technical stuff, since you’d find that readily on the web. Rather, I’ll simply give my impressions and a few examples and hope it’s of some help. After all, I’m not a pro – it’s just my opinions! Continue reading »

Perhaps the most traditional of Irish baked goods would be soda bread. Despite this obvious fact, I had never ventured down the magnificent road of soda bread-making until now. After a few {gentle} requests, I decided to get my feet wet this week with a beautiful and simple Avoca recipe…a traditional, bare-bones plain soda bread, which turned out wonderfully, and begged me to make more. Cariñena is the largest Spanish DO in the wider region of Aragón, which also encompasses Calatayud, Somontano and Campo de Borja. It used to produce monstrous reds consisting of up to 19% abv until regulations were tightened in 1990. Now you shouldn’t see a Cariñena wine over 14%. That might make some people sad.
This is where the grape variety Carignan is originally from, now widely grown in southern France. It is still grown in Cariñena, but here it is known as Mazuelo. Continue reading »

At dinner years ago with Matt’s old college friend and his wife and two-year-old daughter, I remember watching in amazement as their little girl gobbled up an appetizer of Gorgonzola-stuffed mushrooms. Coming from a family where my sister and twin brothers were classic picky eaters, I asked what their secret was in getting their daughter to eat so well. “We don’t make a big deal out of new foods,” they said.
