Yesterday marked the inaugural Share the Love Day with Delicious magazine. I wrote about it here last week, but it is basically a day to bake an apple crumble for you and then a second one for a friend, neighbour or stranger to Share the Love. I had some rhubarb in the freezer as my neighbour had returned from her dads farm in the summer with a generous haul for me so I decided to use that too. While I am not a big fruity cake or dessert fan I absolutely love crumbles, they are perfect comfort food on cold autumn or winter evenings. Myself and the hubs demolished half in one sitting while it was still warm from the oven, and I am counting down the hours to dinner today so that I can have the rest. My neighbours were delighted when I knocked on their door as they had no dessert for last night, they tried to send me home with bottles of wine to say thank you, naturally I refused what with me being a clean living soul and all. So me knocking on their door, crumble in hand, really brightened up their weekend. I think you will agree that is mission accomplished. Don’t feel that you have to wait a whole year to Share the Love again, surprise someone out of the blue with something fresh from the oven, it will make their day. Continue reading »

Once again I find myself playing catch up on the blog, this time to write a little about Bloom which ran from 2nd – 6th June in the Phoenix Park.
Myself and my mum headed down on the Thursday, and after encountering a bit of a tailback getting into the car park, we were soon walking through the show gardens and enjoying our surroundings.
As my mum is a keen gardener we spent quite a long time in the show gardens. Continue reading »

Last Thursday I had a coffee morning in aid of The South Westmeath Hospice at Mount Temple hall. I must say that I was thrilled with how many made the effort to call in.
The Hospice is a fantastic cause and one that many like to support. So many families in Ireland have been affected by Cancer and if anyone has had a loved one cared for at a local hospice you’ll be well aware of the amazing work that they carry out. Continue reading »

Here's hoping the sun keeps shining for todays open day at No.1 Pery Square where I've been tinkering away this summer on the kitchen garden project.
You are all aware of the lack of sunshine so it meant a not great time for tomatoes but strawberries and raspberies were good, and what a bumper crop of spuds we got from the raised bed.
From 3pm today garden lovers and everybody are welcome to come and see the garden. Continue reading »

Ah, pigs and teenagers. Two words that probably occur in the same sentence more often than we’d like to admit. The state of my teenage bedroom drove my parents into a apoplectic frenzy. But I’m much tidier now, I swear. These two lads – Patrick and Hugh McInerney are some of the most enterprising teenagers you’re ever going to meet. From their house in Kilkenny they run a business breeding and selling rare breed pork. Continue reading »

After making the Spicy Asian Chicken Noodle Soup, I was on a roll… I was browsing in Marks & Spencer and saw a jar of Singapore Laksa paste which was billed as being perfect for soup, being full of lemongrass, galangal, fish sauce, chili & anchovies. Yes, I could have made it myself but I’m a bit of a lazy article and who am I to argue with M&S – they never normally get it wrong! So, I armed. Continue reading »
