I suddenly realised that i had never had baked alaska and i had in fact never even made it (shock horror)! I was also lead to believe that it was a little tricky… however this was when i was much younger and had not started baking on a daily basis.
I have to admit that the whole ‘baked alaska’ spell came from seeing a re – vamped one at the Merrion hotel when i went down. Continue reading »

San Lorennzo’s
Following a Saturday morning shopping expedition in the city centre I met up with himself at San Lorenzo’s for an early lunch. I’d heard reports of good food being dished up here so I thought it would be worth trying it. It was only 12:55 and we were the first to arrive. MrW isn’t too keen on being the only diner in a restaurant but I managed to coax him inside! It wasn’t long before a few more diners ventured in. Continue reading »

My earliest memories of wild garlic are from school, where it used to grow along the pathway covered by trees. We used to pick the leaves and flowers and bring them into class, only to be told off because of the unbelievably pungent smell. While we never ate it back then, little did I realise that this wonderful free food could be transformed into so many delicious dishes. Wild garlic has been used in Irish cooking for hundreds of years. Continue reading »

The Method
Place all the ingredients into a food processor and blitz until smooth.
Add a little more oil if you prefer a looser consistency.
Season with sea salt and ground black pepper and taste.
Transfer to clean jars and top with an extra drizzle of oil to create a seal.
The jars will keep in the fridge for at least one week. Continue reading »

I know this is real winter grub here, but while April is refusing to behave I still have that urge to eat warm, rich, weighty food. The first time I tried toad was when Curious Davide (<– click and scroll down to view his other recipes) made it back in January. This is more or less how he did it.
The most important thing of course is your choice of sausage. Continue reading »

I really never intended on posting about the wedding. S’tasty is a recipe blog afterall. But, a few people were asking, so here goes…. I’m not one for fanfare, and was trying to keep the event as low key as possible. There was no wedding planner, there wasn’t a theme, and there were certainly no pink sugared almonds. It was however, the ultimate DIY family wedding. We had many helpers on board (family and friends) who had all been assigned specific tasks. Continue reading »

We love food events here at CheapEats but have to admit that there isn’t often a whole lot at the cheap end of the spectrum. The likes of Taste of Dublin can be enjoyable but come with a fairly hefty price tag. So we were pleasantly surprised and impressed to hear about the Yelp Backyard Bazaar – a completely free food event. Continue reading »

No visit to London would have been complete without at least a cursory look at its growing brewing renaissance. I had expected to see more from the likes of Brodie’s, London Fields, Redemption, Sambrooks and so on, but I don’t think I encountered any. Maybe I was just in the wrong sorts of pubs. Camden Town I saw plenty of, and most of the beer specialists had Kernel bottles.
It was to the latter that we headed on the morning of Day 3. Continue reading »

Happy Birthday and Joyeux anniversaire Star Anise
Time to say Happy Birthday or Joyeux anniversaire to Star Anise, one of the better restaurants in the city. Next month, Virginie and Conor celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Bridge Street venue and will do so in some style. In just a single day, I received news of two great events, both of which deserve to be supported. First up were a group of 3rd culinary students from DIT who are holding an Eat Only Irish night on May 2nd and will charge a mere €20 per head for an eight course tasting menu. More details here.
The second event comes courtesy of the Emerald Warriors (EWRFC), Ireland’s gay rugby club, who will hold their 5th annual fundraising ‘Tea Dance’ and ‘Bake Off’. Continue reading »

On May 2nd, a group of 3rd year Culinary students from Dublin Institute of Technology will once again put their money where their mouths are. Led by Darryl Murphy, the theme of the meal is “Eat Only Irish”, adhering to the concepts of seasonality, origin and the tenets of the Slow Food Movement “Good, Clean, Fair”.
Following an inaugural event in March, the students have taken the lessons learned on board, and promise an even better event in May. Continue reading »

As the country's attention now turns to water charges, something that's been in situ for decades across the water, our own minds might turn to butts. Not the ones behind you, but the butts for water, rain water collection, harvesting, call it what you will, free water!!! Water, the thing we takes for granted, the thing we have so much of, the thing we have the luxury of wishing it would go away. Continue reading »

Co-winemaker Craig Murphy (Murph) is Ant Moore‘s right hand man in the winery. In these two posts, the second to follow next week, Murph invites us to better understand the winemaking process in their production of Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. There’s some technical ‘wine-speak’ used here, but I think most of us will be able to follow easily enough. If you do have any questions, leave a comment and I’ll get one of the lads to answer for you! Continue reading »
