Caramelized Onion Quiche

A post by Vicky at S'tasty

This quiche tasted so good, that I just had to have a glass of wine with it. This particular recipe takes quiche to a whole new level. Just imagine it – crisp, buttery pastry, layers of soft, sweet, caramelized onions and finally some delicious, nutty Gruyere cheese with pillow soft eggs. This recipe does take a little time to make, with the onions taking nearly an hour to caramelize, but the end result is so delicious and divine, you won’t mind the effort.  Continue reading »

Mulranny Park Hotel
Mulranny, County Mayo
(093) 36 00 0
A few weeks ago we were invited to attend the annual launch of the season for the #GourmetGreenway in Mulranny, County Mayo. Having a grá for my birth county made this an easy decision for the Chef and I, so with a bag packed, we headed north-west for the night, thankful that my Mum was on hand to take care of the rug rats.  Continue reading »

Aegean Flavours

Agean Flavours is the brand new book from Didem Senol Tiryakioglu, published by Jacqui Small. Officially released today for the UK, US and Australia (the book was previously available in Turkey in 2010), I’ve been enjoying going through the book over the past few weeks as it’s pure crammed recipes and photos from Turkey’s Aegean region, mashed with contemporary favourites.
The author, Didem Senol Tiryakioglu is a graduate of the French Culinary Institute in Manhattan.  Continue reading »

Cornstore’s Summer of Fish

With a stunning display by Chef John O’Connell, the Cornstore put the focus very firmly on their new fish menu last Tuesday. And make no mistake about it, they take their fish seriously here and it comprises close to fifty per cent of the menu at one of Cork’s most popular restaurants, also well known for its aged steaks.  Continue reading »

Shane Long talks to the Dublin Ladies Craft Beer Society

A footnote to Monday’s post on the Franciscan Well Easter Beer Festival today. Founder Shane was keen to show off the new education centre that they’ve put into the upstairs bar, the walls decorated with flavour wheels, brewing diagrams and tutored tasting instructions.  Continue reading »

Giles Calver at Outstanding By Design

Giles Calver is the focus of part two of the Outstanding By Design recordings. Well regarded for his landmark publication What Is Packaging Design, Giles’ talk to close out the Outstanding By Design event in Kilkenny last weekend looks in great detail at a wide variety of packaging forms, why they’re chosen, why the work or don’t work for a food product and why they work or don’t work for the end user.  Continue reading »

Taste of the Week
Orchard Cottage Goats Milk Cheese

The Desmond family in Ballinhassig, (County Cork), make a fantastic soft goats cheese, under the Orchard Cottage label, and it is our Taste of the Week. Can’t make out how I’ve haven’t come across this one until now.

It is beautiful and comes in a jar.  Continue reading »

Ever wondered how a family on a small income can afford a “massive fucking tv”? That’s a quote from Jamie Oliver by the way! It’s easy looking from the outside in to assume that being on a low income means that you shouldn’t or can’t have the trappings of a modern lifestyle. The Savings Trap […]

Citrus Coconut Sponge Cake

A post by Aoife - Babaduck at Babaduck

You're right, I have been a bit remiss on the old baking front for the past few months.  I think I lost my baking mojo to be quite honest as the day job has been a bit manic and has sapped my energy.  I do have a very highly developed sense of guilt and when one of my new colleagues remarked that she had never eaten anything I had made, the guilt went into overdrive.  Ever since, I've had ideas whirling around in my head of things to bake.  Continue reading »

If you look for recommendations for cocktails in Seattle, the answer often comes in the form of “wherever Murray Stenson is currently working. He was between jobs on my recent short trip to Seattle, leaving me without the chance to enjoy his work. Stenson had spent many years behind the bar at the Zig Zag Cafe, making it my first choice for a Friday cocktail in Seattle.

Zig Zag is nestled off a little plaza, just below Pike Place Market.  Continue reading »

I have been curious about the talk of widespread Iodine Deficiency in Ireland and the UK for a while now, but it took a recent radio interview with Professor Mike Gibney, professor of Food and Health at UCD, to prompt me to further look into the claims that most of us are getting insufficient iodine for our needs.  Continue reading »

The second in a series of videos from the Biabeag Outstanding By Design event this past weekend is in the wild and this time features Giles Calver, author of What Is Packaging Design.
In his talk (with slides included in the video), Giles looks at the good and bad sides of packaging design, what works and what doesn’t, why certain producers go for particular styles in packaging and visual branding and all with a focus on food.  Continue reading »

Culture & Chips – Taking place in Limerick this June Bank Holiday weekend

I think myself and Mrs. Any Given Food may have had to change our June Bank Holiday plans. A mail last night from Limerick Chamber brought the quirky Culture & Chips festival weekend to our attention and the thoughts of the World Chip Championships sound like right craic for the Saturday of the bank holiday weekend.  Continue reading »
