(c) EU Commission: part of an infographic on organic farming supports

Late last year a range of organisations involved in organic farming delivered a three hour information evening in three different locations.

A market overview was presented, including livestock/horticulture supply chains. Also outlined were supports, the registration process, and how the GLAS scheme relates to organic farming.  Continue reading »

I know, I know, I’m a bit late with this. And I know, I know, I’ve been missing in action now for far too long. Inexcusable really, but I hope that you will understand when I explain. But first things first, I would like to wish you all a Happy New Year, and hope that 2015 is one of health, happiness and love for each of us. Secondly I hope that you all had a lovely Christmas. I had the loveliest one with family and friends and plenty of just me and him time.  Continue reading »

Taste of the WeekYeast Loaf by Natural Foods Bakery

This yeast loaf, by Natural Foods Bakery in Blackrock, is a favourite around here and is Taste of the Week. Natural Foods may no longer be operating at the farmers markets but you’ll find them at their cafes in Paul Street (where I bought this loaf), Fitzgerald’s Park, and at Pier Head in Blackrock. Buy local, fresh and fair!  Continue reading »

There is an inevitability of jumping on the healthy bandwagon around this time of year, but I’m not opposed to it! It’s a good time to refocus, plan and get excited about the year of cooking ahead.  Although I love my hearty comfort food dishes during these colder months, one thing that keeps my immune system in check is possibly my best habit- juicing!  I started back when I was living at home, when my mom bought a juicer and a copy of Nigel Slaters brilliant juicing book, Thirst.  Continue reading »

Super Green Smoothies

A post by Hannah Dare - Organico at Organico Bantry

After the positive response I had to my recent article on Healthy Breakfasts, I thought I would explore a little further and give you some inspiration for a really healthy (breakfast) smoothie. These green smoothies may look strange but they leave you feeling SO glowingly healthy inside and out you won’t mind! They are a great way of getting in the veggies without even noticing it, and with a little work you will even get your kids enjoying them too.  Continue reading »

We’re nearly 2 weeks into the New Year. January is a long flipping month if you get paid monthly, some people may have almost 7 weeks between paydays. I hope that these grocery shopping tips will help you just a little bit. If you’re finding things hard you might like to check out my store cupboard stocktake and use up what you have in stock before you head out to buy some more.
Most of the supermarkets are now pushing on with Spring and Spring-cleaning specials.  Continue reading »

Fat and the role it plays in our diet and in our bodies has been in the news a lot lately. From the way it’s been reported in the media, the current prevailing wisdom is that fat is no longer a culprit in the fight against obesity. We’ve been getting it wrong all along.  Continue reading »

Good gracious! It’s been over two years since Vinca’s-in-tha-kitchen last posted. That’s a long, long time in anybodies book, let alone on a blog. Let’s face it, any blog which isn’t regularly updated and tended to tends to lose its readership very, very quickly…

It’s time to start baking again!  Continue reading »

I am studiously avoiding the bathroom scales because I know that after a Christmas of feasting it will more than likely say: “Gerroff, ya great lump!”
I got brilliant advice from a friend on how to lose weight instantly: “Turn the scales back 5kg on the 1st of January!” Unfortunately my bathroom scales are digital and they refuse to tell even the whitest of white lies.  Continue reading »

Bauduc’s Superior Red Double

Summer (2014) tasting at Bauduc

Chateau Bauduc Close de Quinze 2012, Bordeaux supérieur, 14% abv, €18.99 at Red Nose Wines

This single vineyard blend, of Merlot (85%) and Cabernet Sauvignon, is supple and fruity, a classic Bordeaux, produced by English couple Gavin and Angela Quinney in their lovely vineyard, Chateaux Bauduc near Créon, in between the Garonne and Dordogne.

This is a very dark red, almost black, with ripe red fruit on the nose.  Continue reading »

Out for a scoop

A post by The Beer Nut at The Beer Nut

Word arrived via the Beoir forum recently (cheers Cathal!) that a pub in the northern Dublin suburb of Swords had set up a brewery in its basement and that the first beer was now available. As it happened I had some spare time at the end of my extended Christmas holiday so ventured up last Friday afternoon for a looksee.
The Old Schoolhouse is one of those organic, rambling country-style pubs, nestling into an embankment just outside Swords village and covering multiple levels, inside and out.  Continue reading »

Indian Roti Bread

A post by Chupi & Luke at What to Eat.ie

The perfect partner in crime to curry? Yummy Indian flatbreads such as naans. I love naan bread, but naan bread doesn’t love me, whatever it is with the yeast based naan they leave me feeling bloated & too full after eating them. These chapati are the perfect sauce-mopping companion, made in minutes and can be cooked on a dry frying pan. Trust me you will wow your mates!  Continue reading »
