Has any reviewer ever seriously reviewed breakfasts? I don’t mean once in a while – but all the time. It’s a question I pondered last week when I met the excellent photographer, Kelvin Boyes for lunch in Cargoe’s Café. I’d never been so I was online checking to see where the place was located and found that the café had been a named as the Best Breakfast in Northern Ireland by the Observer Food Monthly Awards in 2007.
Does anyone really give two hoots whether a breakfast is top class or just plain alright? Let’s be honest, when it comes to your top meal of all time, breakfast rarely gets a look in, does it?
I remember some excessively priced breakfasts from my travels. The Hilton in Rome stands out for its €150 breakfast for two. In fairness it did include Champagne, but €150 for breakfast? And before you ask, I didn’t order said breakfast, but I did watch two Americans eat their way through it.
I had a spectacular breakfast in a wonderful hotel in Oban (the Oban Caledonian hotel) a few years back, but it was included in the room price.
I don’t think I’d pay an extravagant amount for breakfast. Not ever.
What’s the most you’ve ever paid for breakfast and what would you be willing to spend?
Getting back to Cargoe’s though – I had a nice lunch of Moroccan tangerine with cous cous. It could have done with having a bit more oomph to it, but it was a decent lunch. Seems like a nice place to have a quiet bite. I’m sure I’ll be back again.
