Coming events in Dublin
There is quite a lot going on in February. All of these events sound good to me.
Thursday, Feb 9, 7:30pm
An Introduction to Whiskey. Michael Lawlor, from the Celtic Whiskey Shop, will present 3 Irish, 3 Scotch, 1 American and 1 Japanese whiskey. This is the first in a series. My cup, or should I say, my dinner plate, runneth over.
I had the pleasure, yesterday, of enjoying my second all-potato menu in as many weeks (and yes, I know what you’re thinking – some gals just have all the luck). Continue reading »

We had a Green Spot night at the society this week. We have heard a lot about the Single Pot Still (SPS) style over the last year: it’s both the proud past and a good chunk of the future of Irish whiskey. You could easily make the case that SPS was saved for future generations by Green Spot which puttered along for years as other brands disappeared or converted to a lighter, blended composition. I won’t mince my words about my recent visit here. I was stunned by how mediocre the experience was. We arrived at about 2:45 on a Sunday afternoon when the main rush for lunch was finished. We selected our own table (it is a pub after all) and a waiter brought menus to us. We were ravenous and made our decisions fairly quickly so were not too pleased at the slowness of the order taking – there was plenty of staff and most of the other patrons were eating already. Just down the street from my day job, there's a restaurant where the food is fabulous and the atmosphere is joyous. It's called Caffe Formenti and their Italian coffee kickstarts my day. Richie the chef/owner absolutely loves food and many a "try this and see what you think" moment has happened in the morning. Last week, he gave me some of his straight from Italy hazelnut paste to use at home. Continue reading »

Recently I was asked by the people at Low Low to host a meal for my family or friends similar to that of a Come Dine With Me experience. As part of the challenge I had to incorporate some of the Low Low products within my recipes that I was making. Already being familiar with their range of spreads and cheeses I actually found myself spoilt for choice with what I would make. Continue reading »

First off I want to say thanks to everyone for their kind words and good wishes on our soon-to-be lil’ Murphy baby. It’s always nice to feel the warmth and good spirits from you guys. Right enough of that soppy stuff.
We’re half way through the pregnancy (of course I say ‘we’ like I have any involvement in this part of it but you know what I mean) and I have to say things are going great. Continue reading »

I’m getting old. I had intended to post this review on Monday but having celebrated my birthday in Cork on Saturday and again with friends in Dingle on Monday (the actual day of my birthday), I’ve been suffering the consequences ever since. My head has only just recovered to the point where I can think straight. Terrible, pounding hangovers seem to be the hallmark of life in my thirties…But birthdays do have to be celebrated, don’t they? Continue reading »

With 20% off Spain in January and February, I thought why get a good paella recipe up and pair it with a few great value wines. For best results, use real chicken stock here. It’s a handy recipe you’re bound to use again and again. Continue reading »

The Irish spud is in a bit of a crisis. Sales are declining and Irish farmers say this season they are selling potatoes below the cost of production. Like all commodity producers, potatoes are victims of the marketplace and as Ireland had high yields this year (the crop was very good) there is over supply. Over supply leads to a depressed price, and a very unfortunate situation for farmers who are growing a vegetable that they are ultimately forced to sell at a loss. Continue reading »

The Beers
Ying’s Palace
Celebrated the coming of the Year of the Dragon, a little on the late side, with a very tasty meal indeed at Ying’s Palace in Mayfield last night. This is a really well appointed restaurant with a high degree of space and comfort and consistently good food. But, like many Chinese establishments, the take-away business outshines the. Hey guys,
I came across this article during my early morning perusal of the social media mecca, Facebook. I can’t remember where I got it from but I figured I’d pass it along. I think one of the hardest things for people to grasp when buying food is trying to figure out what the hell the label actually means. I try to explain to people that all the info on a label is for 1 serving and not for the entire box, container, jar or whatever. Continue reading »

Is it any wonder that British food has a bad reputation with dubious-sounding dishes such as Bubble n Squeak, Wet Nelly, Clapshot, Huffkins, Singing Hinnies, Tiddy Oggies, Spotted Dick, and my own particular favourite, Toad-In-The-Hole.
I steered well clear of Toad for many years because I thought it might be named after its filling. However, I have since discovered that Toad-In-The-Hole is a Yorkshire-type batter, embedded with meaty sausages, all smothered in onion gravy. Continue reading »

Our favourite supermarket offer is back on in Marks & Spencer shops till Tuesday, and it’s perfect for this hibernating time of year. They have a couple of healthy-ish options on the list this time, such as the whole chicken, the salmon fillets or the ‘lightly dusted lemon sole’. (I wish they’d say what it’s dusted with though. Dust?).
The full menu is available on the M&S website. Continue reading »

My first taste of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc was what started my love for wine. It always helps of course when you’re out there and you’re actually tasting it in the winery. Then I came home and very quickly realised that the overripe branded bulk wines of Oyster Bay and White Cloud are nothing like the wines I tasted in Allen Scott’s, Jane Hunter’s or Cloudy Bay. There’s no cheating the market, you have to pay a little extra for good wines from New Zealand. Continue reading »
